Strategic Staffing to Stabilize SQL Server Operations

Overview

  • Client: CPI Card Group
  • Contact: Joel Foundy, Lead Database Administrator
  • Service: IT Staffing – SQL Server & Infrastructure
  • Engagement Type: Nearshore Dedicated Team
  • Timeline: Since mid 2025
  • Tech Stack:
    • Jira, Gitlab, SQL Server (SSIS, SSRS, SSMS), Spotlight,Visual Studio, PowerShell

The Challenge

Before engaging with Celerik, CPI had experienced multiple failed attempts to staff its database operations:

“We’ve had two different DBAs. One was a contractor, another one was a full-time employee. Both hires just did not work out.” — Joel Foundy, Lead DBA

The client was left with no support beyond their internal lead, which created a significant bottleneck and risk in a highly complex, compliance-driven environment. They urgently needed:

  • More bandwidth for maintenance, scripting, and deployments
  • Coverage for on-call duties and patching
  • Support for upgrading legacy servers still running SQL 2012
  • Reliable execution of infrastructure projects, like consolidating reporting into a unified platform

The Solution

Celerik provided a team of three technical professionals to support CPI's SQL Server landscape. Two members were described as “a good quality addition to the project”, demonstrating initiative, ownership, andthe ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

However, one team member struggled to meet performance expectations. Joel shared that reviewing their work became “too much work”, requiring constant oversight and corrections. Upon receiving this feedback, Celerik acted immediately to propose and coordinate the onboarding of a replacement:

The client appreciated the transparent and proactive handling of the issue.

Impact

Before Celerik With Celerik
Sole internal expert (Joel) managing everything Distributed support across three dedicated engineers
No trust in previous external hires Confidence regained with high-performing engineers
No reliable on-call coverage Celerik team available outside 9–5 and for weekend patching
Delay in infrastructure upgrades SQL Server migrations and scripting tasks underway
Risk of burnout and knowledge silos Resilience through team-based delivery

“We needed people that could get on-call, understand the environment, make changes, cover business needs… and just help with regular maintenance and upgrades.” — Joel Foundy, Lead DBA

Client Feedback

“The first impressions were good. Everyone was very respectful.”
“You’re understanding. You’ve been good about handling the whole situation with replacements.”
“Celerik has only continued to impress me with their constant check-ins and new suggestions.”
Joel Foundy, Lead DBA

Looking Ahead

Celerik is working with CPI to improve intake processes and create a structure where the team can:

  • Suggest improvements
  • Proactively flag opportunities for optimization
  • Align technical work with CPI’s compliance and scheduling constraints

As the client noted:

“Eventually it’s going to have to come as well as: hey, I found this... this is what we should be doing. Create a ticket around it.” — Joel Foundy, Lead DBA
